Ontario taxpayers are paying more than a billion dollars a year in disability payments to patients suffering from concussion issues, according to a study released last Wednesday.

Dr. Henry Svec, the owner of the Sport Concussion Research Centre in London released preliminary findings of the study on the impact of concussions in Ontario. It examined the reports of those who had been referred to a private psychological clinic for suspected disability status.

Svec said the study took a conservative figure of $1,000 a month of payments in each case file leading to a figure of $4.05 billion per year. The study estimated that about $1.05 billion in direct payments goes to those suffering from concussions or traumatic brain injury. While post-concussion syndrome or traumatic brain injury may not be the only factor leading to a disability, the study suspects they were significant in leading to the disability.
