girls soccerCLEVELAND — Concussions have received their share of attention lately—mostly in football, but now one girls sport is getting some attention from the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Soccer Concussions are more frequent than you think, in fact, the Ohio High School Athletic Association or OHSAA says the number one girls sport for concussions is soccer.

“It’s actually starting to rival football,” said Tim Stried, Director of Communication for the OHSAA.

According to the Ohio High School Athletic Association, here are the number of reported concussions in boys and girls soccer from the fall of 2012 to the fall of 2014 as reported by game officials.

BOYS                          GIRLS

39                                 38 (fall 2012)

62                                 84 (fall 2013)

47                                 53 (fall 2014)

These numbers do not reflect concussions sustained during practice or away from the playing field.  In the fall of 2013, the number of concussions in girls soccer doubled and in the last two years, there were more reported concussions in girls soccer than boys soccer.

“It’s definitely something we need to monitor and keep our eye on,” said Stried.

Here’s how the numbers stack up against football.

OHSAA rules state that a soccer player may wear approved head bands, but the use of a helmet is not permitted.

“If a student athlete has an injury of some kind and or a recent concussion and they then want to feel like they want to wear a helmet in future competition to help with that previous injury, what we would say is that that student-athlete should not be allowed to compete again until they are fully cleared to compete without a helmet,” Stried said.

Here’s another thing to consider when looking at the number of concussions in girls soccer and in football, the majority of the concussions in football are happening on game night.

“Soccer practice in most cases is very similar to the game as far as the speed, the collision of the ball with the head that is very similar to what you will see in the game,” said Stried.

While the numbers may catch your attention, thanks to the data and the awareness being placed on concussions, sports as a whole are much safer than they’ve ever been.

“Sports are still safe to play at the high school level and we sure hope people are not scared away from participating just because we have more data now,” Stried said.

Football remains the number one sport for concussions according to the OHSAA.
