ConcussionHigh school athletes suffered 1,230 concussions that were reported to the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. (IHSAA) during the fall athletic season.

This is the first year that the IHSAA has requested information on student-athlete head injuries, and participation is still voluntary. A little less than half of Indiana schools provided information.

While information was gathered for all student-athletes, nearly 70 percent involved football players.

“We are being as transparent as humanly possible to make sure that we are doing everything right for the safety of our players,” says Jake Gilbert, head football coach at Westfield High School.

Westfield reported their statistics to the IHSAA. Gilberts says the district has 150 players, and there were 12 concussions this season. He says improvements in equipment, techniques, awareness and education have made a big difference in how the game is played.

“I think that parents understand that we are making great strides. We’re doing fantastic things to keep kids safe.”

However, Gilbert says there needs to be a bigger conversation about concussions in all sports, not just football.

“There needs to be an understanding that we should do everything we possibly can to protect students no matter what sport they are in,” says Gilbert.
